Many Churches have neglected the biblical teaching of church discipline. Some would even say that the use of it would be spiritual abuse. The Bible is clear that church discipline should be used, and that it can be misused. In this very passage, the rogue pastor Diotrephes is misusing the process of church discipline, yet the Apostle John does not throw out the teaching.  Pray with me that churches today will apply this biblical teaching again.  Pray they will apply it with strength and grace, and that it will be used to restore fallen brothers and sisters in Christ. 

Prayer:

Father, we need the godly use of church discipline in our churches. Many churches have neglected church discipline. For these churches I pray they’ll get back to the Biblical way of dealing with sin in the community of faith (Matthew 18:15-20; I Corinthians 5; Revelation 2:20-23).  But Father, some churches and leaders abuse church discipline.  Pastors, like Diotrephes who was putting people out of the church in an ungodly fashion, are abusing this process You established. May this not be the case in our church and in the church at large.  Establish church discipline in Your church again, may it be rooted in compassion and love.  I pray that church discipline will be a redemptive force in my congregation,  just as You designed it to be,  in the name of Jesus, the Lord of the church.
