It’s easer to be a lukewarm Christian now than it’s ever been. The temptation to allow our modern wealth to rock us to sleep has never been more fierce.  We possess more than the world has ever had, but in many ways we’re poorer than we’ve ever been. We’re physically comfortable, but spiritually sick. Yet we don’t have to live this way. We can awaken to the presence of God. We can enter into the veil that was ripped for us. We can burn for Him. Pray this prayer with me to repent of our lukewarmness.

Prayer

Father, rid my heart of complacency. I don’t want to be satisfied with material wealth.  Lord, self-security is no security at all.  Father, make me hungry for You (Matthew 5:6)!  You told the nation of Israel to look at the other cities around them, the other nations, and though they are smaller in size, they survived and thrived at times.  But Israel was better off because they had You.  Father, they coveted nations that had less than them. This was folly on their part, but Lord, don’t let me make the same mistake.  I don’t want to desire the treasures of the wicked; I want to seek You. Coveting the wicked would be my undoing. I long for You to be my greatest desire.  Even if You prosper me don’t let it steal my heart. Don’t let it woo my heart from You.  Deliver me of this temptation.  Even if I sleep in the richest of beds, eat the finest of foods, drink the finest of wines, and surrounded by the arts, if I have lost You, then I’ve lost everything.  If my heart does not grieve over what Your heart grieves over, then I am the poorest of men.  It’s Your presence that makes me rich!  Fuel my heart with passion for You.  You’re my pleasure and my security.  If I fall into complacency and materialism, then convict my heart quickly and sharply because I know this is the path to bondage. Keep me hot for You in Jesus name, amen.

Amos 6:1-7

Woe to those who are at ease in Zion
And to those who feel secure in the mountain of Samaria,
The distinguished men of the foremost of nations,
To whom the house of Israel comes.
Go over to Calneh and look,
And go from there to Hamath the great,
Then go down to Gath of the Philistines.
Are they better than these kingdoms,
Or is their territory greater than yours?
Do you put off the day of calamity,
And would you bring near the seat of violence?

Those who recline on beds of ivory
And sprawl on their couches,
And eat lambs from the flock
And calves from the midst of the stall,
Who improvise to the sound of the harp,
And like David have composed songs for themselves,
Who drink wine from sacrificial bowls
While they anoint themselves with the finest of oils,
Yet they have not grieved over the ruin of Joseph.
Therefore, they will now go into exile at the head of the exiles,
And the sprawlers’ banqueting will pass away.
